FAQs About Milwaukee University Graduate School Cooperative
4. What happened in summer 2005?
In the summer of 2005, MWBSI ran an open-enrollment work-based summer program located at 35th and Lisbon. The program was built on a three-part foundation:
- Physical training – We started every morning at 7 a.m. with two hours of intense, military-style physical training. This created a culture of discipline, effort, and respect.
- Academics – Every student was required to meet requirements for Spanish, math, and daily journaling, in order to be eligible for employment.
- Employment – At first, we employed students directly doing landscaping and simple contracting work. As more students became eligible for employment, we found many of them jobs with external employers.
Over a period of eight weeks, we served over 140 students. 112 of those students secured employment through our program.
