FAQs About Milwaukee University Graduate School Cooperative
7. What is the employment curriculum?
We are seeking employment, internship, externships, coop, and apprenticeship opportunities for our student participants for the summer of 2008. Students are looking to be employed in one of the following ways, depending on their individual interests, goals and abilities:
- Engineering and Architectural Team –students find and procure job-shadowing, internships, externships, and coop opportunities with architectural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering and consulting firms. These students are typically on the payroll of the firm. The job-shadowing, internships, externships, and coop opportunities give the students hands-on and first-hand employment experience in the field of their interest.
- Home Works Team – entrepreneurial landscaping and contracting. It uses the MUGS payroll system and is protected by MUGS insurance. The HomeWorks team sends out student work crews on the weekends during the school year, and will be working full time during the summer.
- IT Support Team – led by a team of experienced Information Technology professionals with significant youth and adult teaching experience. The IT Team members do small jobs for non-profits, churches, and small businesses from building computers, troubleshooting software, network servicing, and computer training. All jobs are performed under the watchful eye and guidance of a competent IT professional.
- Construction Team– prepares students for careers in the construction trade by providing training, job skill development, and apprenticeship opportunities in Masonry, Painting, Insulation, Drywall, Carpentry, Concrete, Electrical, Flooring, Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning (HVAC), Paving, Plastering, and Plumbing.

- Community Partnerships – through established community partnerships with many non-profit organizations such as the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs MUGS Co-op is able to find part-time employment for many of our students. Many of those organizations require a large influx of workers during the summer. If we are unable to employ all of our students through the Home Works Team, the Hospitality and Food Service Team, the Canvassing and Telemarketing Team, the Construction Team, the Information Technology Team or with an independent employer, we will help them find positions from among our community partnerships.
- Independent Employers – through our employment development efforts, MUGS Co-op is able to secure training, job skill development, internships, externships, apprenticeships, coop, and employment with independent, private, for-profit employers in a variety of industries including Engineering, Information Technology, Food Service, Sales, Marketing, Hospitality and many others, for our students who have demonstrated competency, success, and commitment in our in-house employment divisions.
